Staying Safe in Vegas |
Safety can be a troubling issue in Sin City. The police presence is strong and they do their best to ensure every visitor has a safe and enjoyable trip. However, there are things you should look out for and be aware of to help protect yourselves and your party.
The most dangerous time in Las Vegas is between 2 and 5am. If you read any of the local police reports, you see the largest problems occur at these times. Those that like to go clubbing have a lot to do with this. Most parties go on until around 4am. This is not the time you should be somewhat intoxicated and alone. Stay with a group or if you are alone, find a group and stay close to them or ask them if you can walk with them.

Watch the bridges for panhandlers and drug addicts |
Things to avoid include:
Any of the bridges at night
Any of the elevators at night located on the strip (if you have to, take a peak first)
Dark areas out of observation near the bridges
The parking lot between Tropicana and Hooters
The dark area in front of Treasure Island
Any area immediately outside of Fremont Street. Once you turn a corner, things look quite different
Suspicious persons, keep your eyes open
Do not flash cash, it can be too tempting even for non-crooks
Walking alone in any construction area as there are hiding places for criminals and it is usually dark

Helpful tips:
Start drinking water before you arrive. No matter what time of season. Dehydration occurs quickly and is first noticed by being nauseated. If you feel thirsty you are already at a disadvantage. Remember, spending all day in or near the swimming pool does not replace your water and you can become severely dehydrated very quickly.
For men, place your wallets in your front pocket, day or night
For ladies, place your purse tightly on your shoulder with a tight strap
For men and women, try not to carry a bulky purse or wallet
Have a small purse or money clip when walking or going clubbing
Always carry some dollar bills in your front pocket for any tipping, so you don't have to open your purse or wallet
Stop drinking alcohol when you have reached the feeling good point, don't get so drunk that you put yourself at risk
If confronted in a hostile manner just start screaming for help immediately. Don't worry about being wrong
Use the hotel safe in your room, and take only the money you need while out. Never leave yourself broke
The favorite line prostitutes use is to ask you if you want to party. Prostitutes are not allowed in or near the casinos, so they will occasionally come near the front door and head straight for you. When asked if you want to party, do not say yes; it is illegal in Las Vegas. They do not usually want to risk being caught and added to the hotel list, so they will usually leave quickly if you say no. While it may be tempting to say yes to a party, don't do it. There are many that pose as prostitutes but are really police officers. This would be pretty embarrassing if you are married. The difference between an officer and a real prostitute is that an officer will want to party upstairs in their hotel room (as soon as you enter the elevator, you have committed a crime).
A recent problem is occurring in some hotels where security sits near elevators but do not check for a room pass. On several occassions someone will be waiting at your floor and tell you how he/she were locked out of the room, or they need to take a taxi to the airport and one of their friends has their wallet. No matter what the excuse it is a scam. It is an awkward feeling because you may feel trapped. Just say sorry you can't help them and quickly get on your way. They won't want to risk following you and getting caught on video. Cameras are your friend.
One of the frequent mistakes visitors make is to assume they can do anything they want in Vegas. Now some of this is true, but there are some things you should know:
You can't take off all your clothes in public
You cannot be so intoxicated that you can't make it to your hotel room
You can have open containers while walking down the street, but don't make a scene
You can walk around with your guitar, Eiffel Tower, or other large drink in public, but don't use them as a weapon
The strange characters posing for pictures work for tips, and are only allowed to be there if they are actually doing something other than begging. Don't harass these folks, they are simply trying to earn some extra funds.
Drugs are prevalent in Vegas as in many other cities. When you see a person talking to themselves, stay as far away as you can. Don't get into a contest with them should they call you a name as you pass. Simply ignore them
Don't try to pick up coins from the fountains. It might seem fun, but you can get in trouble
Don't jump in or bathe in any of the fountains. This is a really bad idea.
If you get caught and approached by an officer for doing something wrong, just be honest and cooperate. It will be over quickly, and they may let you go without incident. Do not make a scene or get confrontational. Lack of respect will cost you.
Don't jaywalk. Drivers are easily distracted and many pedestrians are hit by cars.
What to do in an emergency
Dial 911 on any phone. This will get you emergency services. Make sure you can accurately describe your location. For example: "I am at the entrance to the Bellagio from the Caesars Palace bridge. I am wearing blue jeans and a white top." Be as descriptive as possible. If you are assaulted, try to remember as much detail as possible; height, weight, clothing, appearance, etc. To search for help, you can walk into any casino and ask for security. One will be found fairly quickly for you. Las Vegas is one of the safest cities in America but because of large crowds it is attractive to criminals. Use common sense and you will never have a problem.
