Poker has grown into a phenomenom so large we felt we couldn't ignore it. We did some homework and what we found out we hope you can use to your advantage.
Most casinos now have a poker room where everyone is invited. The good news is that everyone can play and you don't have to spend two weeks or more. Most games last around 5 hours. The buy-in averages $125 (but there are cheaper ones). The top 10% cash in. Winning or even cashing in some tournaments helps you qualify for some of the more intense events. Many hotels offer significant discounts if you just play in one tournament. You take your coupon or voucher noting that you played (even if just one quick round) to the front desk at most hotels and they will lower your room rate to the poker player rate.
While many professional gamblers play daily in Las Vegas and cash in, many more amateurs with no experience are taking their chances. The more you play and the more you learn how to gamble, the better your chances of cashing in.
Here is a list of the most poplular games that you can watch and/or play in.
World Series of Poker Million Dollar Buy In
Wow, really do you have a million? What about sponsors? A group to help? I wish I did - I would give it a try. You can find this tournament played at the Rio. This is the one that just had a winner enjoy $18 million but over $5 million went to charity.
World Series of Poker
This event takes place all over the country as player's work to earn a spot in Las Vegas. The big tournament takes place at the Rio. The Rio is a Harrah's/Caesar's property and they offer nice discounts for players. The big tournament this year is Tuesday, May 27, 2014 to Monday, July 14, 2014 at the Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino, 3700 West Flamingo Road, Las Vegas, NV Tel: US 800-752-9746. For more information please visit WSOP.com .
Some information provided by a pro player: Once you buy into a tournament you play until you get knocked out. Since there are so many players entering the tournaments then they do break the tournament into days. They typically play 10 levels per day. The levels last typically for 1 hr and there are 15 min breaks every two hours with a 90 minute dinner break after level 6. For example they do this for the main event for the first few days then once they get down to under a 100 players then they end the day based off of players remaining. So they play to 36 players. Then the next day they play until they get to 18 players. Then it is the final 9.
The RIO does give a WSOP rate. Once you enter into a tournament you bring proof back to the front desk check in and they will adjust your rate. However, if you have a players card sometimes you can get better rates with that.
Various Tournaments
We found a nice website that shows many of the current tournaments all over Las Vegas. The site is Allvegaspoker.com Take a look and you will be amazed at the various tournaments taking place daily. Make sure you click the link to Special Events to see the big name games and their dates.
National Heads-Up Poker Tournament - Cancelled
Don't bother looking for this tournament. The 2012 version was suddently canceled really putting a dent on sponsors Full-Tilt Poker and PokerStars.net. You can still visit those websites, but they took a huge hit when the event was cancelled. This is the one first seen in 2005 on NBC. There was an event called Black Friday that really killed many poker sites that were operating overseas. We won't go into too many details here, but gambling outside of casinos online is still illegal.
