Okay, let's face it, everyone has their own idea of how you should manage your money. If I was rich, I might be an authority on the subject, but since I am not...I am going to offer these suggestions that my wife has trained me to use. Without my wife, I might become one of those people that spends all of their money in the first day and then tries to figure out how they can still have fun in Vegas. Don't be one of those people. Believe me it does happen. Here is a set of ideas that works for us. See how you feel about it. First create an envelope for each day that you are going to be there. Use a small mailing envelope. Label it gambling and put the day on the envelope, i.e., Monday, Tuesday. Next create an envelope for transportation (includes taxi money, busses, Monorail, etc.). The next envelope is labeled Food. Create one for gifts and souvenirs. Finally, have one named Tips (Yes, you will tip a lot in Vegas). I will describe what goes in each envelope next.
Call your bank to inform them you will be taking money out each day while in Vegas. You don't need the headache of having your account frozen. In the event that happens, it is only a security measure. Simply call the number on your card and inform them it is you and you are in Vegas. you might politely remind them you called ahead. Take it from a pro, even in you call, it still happens from time to time. It is better to find out at the ATM then while you are making a purchase at a restaurant or gift shop.
Okay so for a four day trip we are up to $100 for tips, $400 for food, $80 for taxis, and $300 for gifts for a total of $580 per person and we haven't spoke of gambling yet. So if you want a nice round trip give yourself $320 for gambling ($80 per day) making the trip $1000. If you don't gamble, good for you, but if you do, this is how you have to look at things. You should plan and budget accordingly before you arrive. A good plan will allow you to maximize your trip and will certainly make it more enjoyable. Make sure your ATM account has only the money you are willing to spend for your trip. Don't put $5,000 in there if you plan to spend only $2,000. It is far too tempting for most people to just take a bit more out. Only spend what you can afford to spend and you will enjoy Vegas more.
